Inner Ring Road, Chennai

The Inner Ring Road (IRR) (Jawaharlal Nehru Road) is a major transportation corridor being developed in Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). It is approximately 35 km long with three distinct arms viz., Northern arm, Central arm and Southern arm, connecting IT corridor at Tiruvanmiyur, NH 45 at Kathipara, NH 4 at Koyambedu, NH 205 at Padi, NH 5 at Madhavaram and joins SH 104 (TPP Road) near Manali.[1]

Details of the corridor

The IRR is a 6 lane road with different modes of mass transits planned along the median in different arms. It is 35 km long with the section between OTA and Kathipara Junction (1.5 km) being shared with NH 45. The southern arm is under construction and expected to be completed in 2012.

Northern Arm [6 km]

The northern arm of IRR starts from Padi Junction and joins SH 104 (TPP) near Manali. It connects NH 205 at Madhavaram Junction. A part of the elevated BRTS is planned along the median of this arm. This section is being strengthened by the NHAI as a part of the port connectivity project.

Central Arm [18 km]

The central arm extends from Kathipara Junction and ends at Padi Junction. It connects NH 45 at Kathipara Junction, NH4 at Koyambedu Junction and NH 205 at Padi junction. A part of elevated metro line 2 is under construction along the median of IRR from Kathipara Junction till Koyambedu. Major landmarks in this section include Thamarai Technology Park, Olympia Technology Park, Hilton Chennai, Kasi Theatre, Udhayam Theatre Complex, Ambika Empire Hotel, SAF Games Village, State Election Commission, Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, Arihant Majestic Towers, Koyambedu grade separator and Vee Care Hospital.

Southern Arm [9.5 km]

The southern arm of IRR extends from IT corridor in the form of Taramani Link Road and joins NH 45 at Officers Training Academy before ending at Kathipara Junction. This section is under construction. The Taramani Link Road is being six-laned under TNUDP-III with World Bank assistance while the section from Velachery MRTS station to OTA is being developed newly by the State Highways department. The MRTS Phase II extension is under construction along the median of the this section.[3] A Rapid bus way is planned along the Taramani Link Road.
